Fertility Clinic
WHAT: Manhattan fertility clinic in an old brownstone building
CHALLENGE: Balancing an intimate & comfortable setting with lab & privacy
requirements; adding a bit of warmth and humor to a clinical process
STRATEGY: Warm tones, natural light & wood floors create a comfortable
atmosphere; required levels of privacy are carefully orchestrated in the layout.

The window to the lab where clients drop off their “specimens” has an abstract sperm pattern etched into the glass.

The Reception has warm tones for carpeting and walls and plenty of woodwork to make clients feel comfortable.

Layers of material and color add texture. The warm color and texture of the brick hints at the domestic


The two examination rooms have sliding panels made of textured eco-resin which allows natural light to stream in without losing the required privacy.


The two collection rooms are furnished in deep red rubber & soft light; the A/C air handlers are mounted in their dropped ceilings: both the lower ceilings and the humming add to a sense of privacy

The offices continue the warm color scheme with brightly painted walls that can easily be changed when necessary. the interior office borrows light from the front one via a large clerestory.

Tiles in the various bathrooms. the round “moon” lamps add a warm glow

The lab has storage space for the nitrogen tanks and IKEA cabinetry adds plenty of storage.
